Abstract: The Rudný mining site including the St George Shaft, a cultural monument since 2007, is located on the eastern slope of Rudný Hill nearthe town of Jihlava. At the turn of 2021–2022, a subsidence was recorded in the area of the presumed shaft mouth, which initiated a comprehensiveprocess of securing this mining-technical burden. The Municipality of Jihlava reported the emergency to the Czech Geological Survey in accordancewith Act No. 44/1988 Coll. Subsequently, in 2022–2025, exploratory, design and construction work was carried out, which was financed by the Ministryof the Environment and coordinated by the state-owned DIAMO company. Drilling surveys confirmed the presence of underground spaces, butdid not confirm their exact dimensions or connecting passages.

The instability manifested itself in a surface collapse with a diameter of up to 12 m. In 2024, extensive excavation of spoil material took place, revealingthe pit floor, stabilising the shaft edge with a reinforced concrete ring, and restoring the function of the drainage tunnel. The work was carried outin close cooperation with heritage conservation and archaeology authorities. At the same time, the access road was stabilised and a passage throughthe shaft spoil was designed. In 2025, a layer of sediment was pumped out to a depth of approximately 15 m using specialised suction technology,revealing unique remains of a water-lifting machine. Subsequently, the drainage tunnel under the busy forest road was finally cleared using prefabricatedLego segments. The town’s long-term goal is to open the shaft to the public as part of a mining educational trail. The entire project representsthe exceptionally complex restoration of an old mine with significant benefits for the preservation of cultural heritage and public safety.
